Large Format Shooting

First Workshop

In the tutorial we planned to make the pumpkin the main subject with the mannequin behind out of focus. We lit both objects separately with two separate broncolor lights however we found that the light behind spilled too much light onto the backdrop and also the pumpkin at the front so we used two poly boards to separate the lights and also block light off the backdrop.

We also used another poly board to reflect light into the shadows of the objects so there wasn't too much difference in the light reading for highlights and shadows of the objects. (No more than 2/3 f stop difference between highlights and shadows)

Plan
I wanted a simple but effective lighting with dark shadows on one side of the face, i also chose to use the white backdrop because i wanted a grey gradient look to my images. I achieved this by using a soft box to light my image which let a little light onto my backdrop.

Set up

Marked images i want to print.

If i had the chance to do the shoot again i would be extra careful about the position of subject for example edge of backdrop is seen in some images. I also accidentally left the dark slide in for 3 frames. Overall i am pleased with the images that came out well and these are the ones i hope to print for my final prints.

Mirrors And Windows

Mirrors and Windows is a portrait series by Italian photographers Gabriele Galimberti and Edoardo Dilelle that draws insight into the lives of women across the world based on their intimate living spaces. Like the work of Rania Matar, this collaborative effort presents a number of young women from different countries and social standings who have invited the photographers into their bedrooms to capture them in their personal space. While some have countless possessions, living in the lap of luxury, others are clearly not as fortunate.

The project states: "In a world that is increasingly shaped by global standardization and IKEA aesthetics, this work explores the rooms of the conventional and the eccentric, the rich and the poor, the mother and the single, the pious and the unbelieving, the sports-obsessed and the shopping-addicted, the tomboy and the girly-girl, the tidy and the shambolic… These bedrooms are the mirrors of the history, personality, culture, obsessions and social status of the girls that occupy them, but are also unique windows into these young women’s worlds."

How this is relevant to my project
Each image tells us a lot about the person by looking into their bedroom environment. In my studio shots i want the viewer to know his/her job through the prop that will be held in the image.

Lighting Tests

         Set Up 1
  • White Backdrop
  • One Soft box
  • Broncolor Pack
  • Broncololor Head
  • Black Polyboard Reflector
  • Canon EF 24 - 105 mm f/4.0 L

For my Lighting i wanted it simple but effective. I wanted to achieve this by having side lighting with dark shadows on one side of the face. I also wanted to turn the White backdrop grey, i did this by placing the model further away from the backdrop and also the lighting. The soft box i was using still let out a little light onto the backdrop turning it grey if i wanted it a darker grey i would have moved further away with the lighting and model.

Testing looking towards and away from lighting.

    Set Up 2
  • Lantern Lighting
  • Broncolor Light Head
  • Broncolor Pack
  • 2 Black Poly Board Reflectors
  • White Backdrop
  • Canon 50mm 1.8 Lens

The Lantern lighting was placed more over the top of the models head pointing down. This lighting is easier to light higher and more over the models head.
